Race Director Brian Locher
Brian became the sixth cross-country coach in Cuesta College when he was hired to take over the team for the 2007 season. He made an immediate impact on the program as both the men and women improved their records from the previous season. He also qualified three harriers for the State Championship.
Brian brings a wealth of experience to the position having served as a coach both nationally and internationally. Both the men and women’s team will benefit from his experience and leadership. He takes over a men’s program that is in need of a good mentor. The program has struggled since Cuesta moved to the Southern California Region in 1983, although it had made four State Championship appearances as a team before the move and has had at least one individual at the State Meet in nine of the past ten years, the Cougars have not finished higher than fifth place in the conference since 1982. The women have been on a recent upswing and were in the State Championships as a team just two years ago. They have been consistently well represented individually at the State Meet over the past two decades. Locher will also have the advantage of training his charges at the Fairbanks Cross Country Course, one of the premier racing sites and the host venue of the 1999 State Meet.
Before coming to Cuesta, Brian had been employed as an assistant coach at nearby Cal Poly SLO, where he also completed his Master’s Degree in Kinesiology. He had also served as an assistant coach at his alma mater, Chico State, after graduating in 2002 with a degree in Recreation Administration. Brian also gained international coaching experience under the guidance of the Olympic Sports Corps. He joined the United States Olympic Committee as an assistant track coach for the Guatemalan National Team.
Brian began his intercollegiate cross-country and track career at the community college level competing for Yuba College. He burst onto the scene his freshman year by qualifying for the State Meet as a harrier and reaching the State Track and Field Meet in the 1,500 meters during the spring. Brian finished his collegiate career at Chico State, where he completed his four-years of eligibility in both cross country and track. He specialized in the 800 meters for the Wildcat track team and also served as the Team Captain. Brian still competes in local competitions and hopes to be inspired to racing greatness while running with his team this season.
Brian continues to reside in nearby San Luis Obispo after earning his Master’s Degree at Cal Poly before taking over the head coaching duties at Cuesta. |
